Each year Laois County Council celebrates creativity in older age by organising events for the May-time Bealtaine Festival in association with Age & Opportunity.
The Laois Bealtaine Festival 2016 took place in hospitals and venues around the county. Abbeyleix Hospital Day Care Centre and St Vincent’s Hospital, Mountmellick enjoyed performances by music duo Tandem, as they took the audience for a trip down memory lane in music, song and story from the Showband era. The ladies of the Laois ICA Federation Choir under the direction of Nuala Kelly also visited the hospitals in Abbeyleix and Mountmellick and were warmly welcomed as they gave a wonderful performance of songs from around the country and bygone years. A capacity crowd enjoyed a tea dance
at the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Wednesday 18th May with Maureen Culleton leading the dances and music by Danny Webster. At Mountmellick Library a capacity crowd of young and old enjoyed Inter-generational Storytelling on Thursday 26th May when Co Antrim based writer and storyteller Liz Weir told tales and shared stories across the generations.
Other events included: Celebrating the Waltz in St. Canice’s Hall, Borris-in-Ossory including an exhibition of Maureen Culleton’s newly composed Laois Dancers Set and an exhibition of Line Dancing in Ballyfin.
